See the damage trawling causes on seamounts
Footage of the amazing biodiversity AND the contrasting damage caused by industrial fishing on the Emperor Seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean.
The Emperor Seamounts are underwater mountains in the North Pacific. As this imagery captured by Florida State University shows, they are home to an abundance of life in the deep ocean. Capturing these images is tricky due to depths which is what makes this footage so special.
The life that lives here also attracts commercial fishers and this footage also reveals the damage that bottom trawling causes to these once vibrant hotspots for marine life. It also shows "ghost" or dumped fishing gear.
In the South Pacific, New Zealand remains the only count...

Emperor Seamount Biodiversity in North Pacific Ocean - Clipreel This amazing footage captures the rich biodiversity that lives on the Emperor Seamounts in the North Pacific Ocean. Seamounts are underwater mountains, often home to thriving communities of marine life. Because they are so deep it can be a challenge to get camera gear down to capture images of the life that flourishes on seamounts....

Why are fur seals starving in Kaikōura?
Просмотров 84914 дней назад
TAKE ACTION: greenpeace.nz/global-ocean-sanctuaries-petition In Kaikōura, on the east coast of the South Island, over 1,000 fur seals have been found dead. It’s unusual. The cause? Starvation. Experts say seabirds are starving too and it’s likely overfishing and climate change are contributing causes. The nutrient rich waters around Kaikōura have historically supported an abundance of marine li...

Luxon’s new fossil gas plan is climate denial
Просмотров 7914 дней назад
Prime Minister Luxon has just announced an absurd plan to open the door to a LNG fossil gas import terminal as well as reverse the ban on offshore oil and gas exploration. In the climate crisis, that's tantamount to outright climate denial and a generational betrayal of New Zealanders who will suffer the cost for decades to come. Right now Aotearoa is at a crossroads where we could choose a cle...

Why are seamounts so important?
Просмотров 14521 день назад
Seamounts, or underwater mountains, are oases of life. Home to coral and sponges, they attract, and support an array of marine life, from fish to sharks and whales and even seabirds. These underwater communities, or biodiversity hotspots, play a vital role in keeping the ocean healthy. But they are often targeted by bottom trawlers who drop massive, heavy nets, that bulldoze the slow growing co...

With "our" greed for seafood (I went veggie, aged 14, in 1985 yet) we leave a lot of garbage and ghost nets in the seas, many ocean animals get stuck in the ghost nets and decease. It hurts.

"I can not believe you are serious." John McEnroe uttered these words many times in his illustrious tennis career. After watching this Greenpeace video I feel exactly the same. Where is the balance and context to these very grandiose statements? Firstly palm plantations are grown for palm oil which is used in the manufacture of foodstuffs and cosmetics destined for supermarket shelves the world over. How misleading this sensationalistic propaganda is from an organisation promoting themselves as saviors of the planet. It is the palm kernel that the oil is extracted from. The husk and the rest of what is left over is termed as the extract. Before this waste by-product was used as stockfeed it was burned. How do you feel about that Greenpeace, was that good for the environment? It's unfortunate because at their heart I recognise there is a genuine want to improve our planets health. New Zealand contributes a total of 0.15 of one percent to global climate emissions. Our total emissions for all types NZ farming, including associated industries, is appropriately 0.075 of one percent. The amount of climate change from this is almost unrecordable. There are far better ways to remove emissions than the very narrow, simplistic and convoluted solutions offered up by an overseas organisation headquartered in the Netherlands, a country which relies heavily on the contribution its dairy farming industry.

Really great discussion and insights - thanks for putting this on GP & to Stephen Poletti & Geoff Bertram for the great points. It's actually kind of nuts how the current energy market is setup - and it's even more nuts that the current government wants to double down on prioritising large company profits over people and the environment - completely shunning the evidence and the ever pressing need for change. So much potential to create a better system! Sustainable energy solutions could not only provide a more resilient network (solar was key during the cyclone Gabrielle recovery) but drastically reduce the cost for households in the long term if done right. Seems to me we need to kick start more community energy based solutions in the short term while we wrangle with the current BS spitting, 3 headed dinosaur in government....

  • @EliotPryor

its no question we can have a clean sustainable energy system. The crime is that the present Government is baking in fossil fuel sources and high electricity prices to suit the gentailers. It's a political choice to guarantee gentailer profits or to meet basic electricity needs for people.

But what can a single person do? I'm vegan for 7 years, we drive a hybrid car, we use phtovoltaics, but still so many people don't seem to care. One of my friends is a grandmother to 3.Still she and her husband goes on cruises. When I tell her, it's not for me. Never will, she answers "you only live once"! True, but that doesn't mean, I don't have to care about the future of our planet. I also believe the rich can save us, but they won't. It's really depressing!

We are lucky in Aotearoa with all our hydro because every hour of sunlight on a panel and every rotation of a turbine means less water through a dam. That water can then pass through later when the sun doesn't shine or the wind doesn't blow. This means that every installation of a panel or turbine automatically comes with grid storage!
